The Science and Engineering Challenge (the Challenge) is a national outreach program that aims to challenge students’ perspectives of science and engineering. Based at the University of Newcastle, the Challenge is now the lead organisation of the Hunter Science Hub, and will partner with more than 17 different organisations during National Science Week to deliver a science extravaganza in the Newcastle CBD.
“We are hoping to raise the profile of science, technology, engineering and maths across the Hunter Region,” said Hub Coordinator Carly Donohue, who also works with the Challenge that since 2000 has reached tens of thousands of students across hundreds of schools.
This will be the region’s first family-friendly science festival that brings together dozens of organisations interested in communicating their science to the community.
Kicking off science week will be the Hunter Electric Vehicle Festival, providing an opportunity to learn about the latest technologies in electric cars.
Attendees can then visit the Newcastle Museum to participate in a range of events:
- ORICA presents a Planetarium show,
- The Geological Survey of NSW discusses exploration in the Hunter
- Lily Serna (of Letters and Numbers fame) is guest speaker at the STEM breakfast, sharing her passion for education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The fun culminates with the Science and Engineering Super Challenge, to be held at Newcastle University on 26-28 August. This initiative brings together the Science and Engineering Challenge, the Australian Science Olympiads, the Geological Survey of New South Wales, the Tom Farrell Institute, the Newcastle Museum, the Newcastle Astronomical Society, Engineers Australia and the ME program.
