Inspiring Australia (NSW) provides grants funds each year to the network of NSW Regional Science Hubs to deliver community engagement programs in their communities. A new fund has been established to support events that target audiences in the 18-35 age group and events that seek to engage civic leaders with scientific concepts and ideas. Expressions of interest are now open and Science Hubs are encouraged to apply. Applications close 30 November.
Program objectives
In order to engage new audiences in discussions with scientists, we welcome proposals that target people who may have had little exposure to scientific concepts. We are particularly interested in supporting events that target those aged 18-35 and are presented in community environments that do not typically feature talks by scientists. We also encourage proposals for initiatives that seek to explore the science in controversial topics.
Eligibility
This program is NOT intended to support events targeting school audiences.
Grants of up to $5,000 are available to initiatives that bring together at least three of the following types of individuals and organisations to create a NSW Regional Science Hub. While many Science Hubs are awarded grant funds to deliver events and activities during National Science Week, some deliver events at other times of the year.
In an effort to build year round science engagement and pathways between all the various science outreach activities that may be underway in a region, the NSW Executive Committee for Inspiring Australia and National Science Week is calling for Expressions of Interest from Science Hubs that are willing to develop and present civic engagement programs.
Program objectives
The purpose of this funding is to broaden the audiences for science engagement and to seek to reach people who may not usually come into contact with science in their day to day lives. In order to engage new audiences in discussions with scientists, we welcome proposals that target people who may have had little exposure to scientific concepts. We are particularly interested in supporting events that target those aged 18-35 and are presented in community environments that do not typically feature talks by scientists. NSW Regional Science Hub vision
Inspiring Australia’s long-term vision for NSW Regional Science Hubs is to build enduring partnerships that in time can become self-sustaining. Applicants to this program will be therefore asked to consider how they intend to become self-sustainable in the longer term.
Eligibility
This program is NOT intended to support events targeting school audiences. Grants of up to $5,000 are available to initiatives that bring together at least three of the following types of individuals and organisations to create a NSW Regional Science Hub:
- Local scientists
- Local government (e.g. councils, National Parks and Wildlife services, youth and family services)
- Business associations and chambers of commerce
- Universities and TAFE colleges
- Arts and community organisations
- Local clubs and societies
Initiatives that are collaborative, involve multiple partnerships and can show evidence of other sources of funding towards the proposed program of activity will be highly regarded.
All applicants must be committed to either founding or joining their region’s Science Hub. One-off events from groups that do not have an intention of continuing to work together in the longer term will not be considered.
First time applicants are advised to check whether there is an existing NSW Regional Science Hub in their region and to make contact with the lead organisation. Organisations that have an interest in joining or establishing a new Science Hub in their region are encouraged to do so. Read the Terms of Reference.
Program content
In terms of reaching the 18-35 market, there are several Australian science engagement programs that successfully target 18-35 year olds including:
Nerd Nites
Kinda Thinky
Pint of Science
Sci at the Local
Raise the Bar Sydney
Other organisations have run nights on themes like Science and Cider, Science and Film and Sci Fi/Crime Fiction and Science.
Civic Engagement programs could include forums and panel debates that seek to engage business, political and influential leaders with the scientific aspects of topical issues. We are open to all kinds of approaches and will be looking for credible proposals that have a clear target audiences and objective in mind.
All applicants are advised to contact Jackie Randles to discuss their proposal ideas on 02 9351 5198 or by email jackie.randles@sydney.edu.au
