Building on the success of the past few years, this year’s Bega Valley Science Festival produced by the Sapphire Coast Science Hub in National Science Week will be bigger and better! Featuring the Fascinating Science interactive exhibition from Questacon along with displays and stalls from a variety of local science organisations, visitors will have a unique opportunity to see, touch and try a variety of technologies while engaging with the depth and breadth of scientific practice on the Sapphire Coast.
Discover all the science the region has to offer though exciting programs run by local organisations including the Atlas of Life in the Coastal Wilderness, the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, Bournda Environmental Education Centre, the Bega Valley Shire Library and a whole bunch more.
Play music with milk bottles, find disappearing pencils and enjoy optical illusions – just a few of the hands-on activities that families can enjoy at the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre during National Science Week from 11- 18 August.
Be fascinated by science
Suitable for the whole family, Fascinating Science is a collection of 32 bright and colourful hands on exhibits and aims to make science fun and relevant for everyone by engaging people in making their own stimulating discoveries.
Visitors can take part in exciting activities such as creating a pyramid using a spatial puzzle that tests your ability to reconstruct three-dimensional shapes, or using geometric puzzle pieces to create a cat, swan, square or triangle.
Fascinating Science focuses on human senses such as psychology, perception, physiology and balance, explored in a fun, interactive way, helping visitors to enjoy learning about science.
Targeted primarily at children aged 8 to 14, but with topics of logic, balance, fluids, illusions and mathematical puzzles of varying complexity, Fascinating Science will engage all ages about the wonders of science.
What else is on the program?
The Microeye microscope from the Atlas of Life will be on display, allowing people to see the world at 100 times magnification with a variety of local flora and preserved fauna to look at on a big screen.
Bega Valley Shire Library will also have a variety of technology on offer including Lego Mindstorms robots, a 3D printer and electronic music making equipment.
A DIY synthesizer workshop using Arduinos will be run by local tech wizard Derek Crannaford along with a variety of talks and presentations by local scientists and technology experts.
