Inspiring Australia is supporting the Ocean Lovers Festival where you can catch music, art, innovative technology, sustainability solutions and top research scientists sharing marine science and sustainability knowledge from 17-22 March at Bondi Beach.
Promoting a hopeful view for the future, the Ocean Lovers Festival will promote things we can be doing on a day-to-day basis that have a direct impact on the health of our oceans.
Whether it’s switching out plastic items for more sustainable counterparts, learning about the benefits of crayweed forests and Living Seawall Tiles, or participating in a Big Bondi Beach Clean, Ocean Lovers Festival offers a myriad of inspiring ways to connect with marine science, ocean ecology and innovative solutions to climate adaptation and mitigation.
Meet the scientists
Curated by Fizzics Education, Science in Your Swimmers presents over 20 scientists who will share their research knowledge in the Ocean Lab, at the Bondi Icebergs and on the Sunshine Stage each day between 11 am to 1pm.
A family-friendly children’s space will also offer hands on activities and shows at Bondi Pavillion and a Shark Tank will consider innovative scitech solutions to some of the greatest threats confronting the World’s oceans.
Research presentations
A diverse lineup of scientific researchers and entrepreneurs will present each day at Bondi Pavillion. Among them are:
- Ecologists Dr Ari Friedlaender from University of California Santa Cruz and Dr Olaf Meynecke from Griffith University will discuss how climate change affects whales.
- Professor Tony Haymet from the Minderoo Foundation will provide the facts on ocean warming explain how scientists measure the heat in the ocean.
- Professor David Booth from UTS will warn of a tropical future for Sydney’s seas
- Associate Professor Will Glamore from UNSW’s Water Research Laboratory will use evidence to predict the future for harbours and rivers.
- Dr Amy Smoothey, a Fisheries Scientist at NSW Department of Primary Industries, reveals the secret life of sharks and exoplains what are the scientific-based guidelines for minimising the risk of shark bites.
Become a citizen scientist with CoastSnap, a project that needs your help to measure changing shorelines. Find out what scientific topics are inspiring the next generation with ten interactive student talks on range of topics and meet the scientists working with Sydney Institute of Marine Science.

Live Ocean Revival Experience
Dive into the famous Bondi Icebergs pool and swim through an underwater Crayweed forest and VOLVO Living Seawall display. This installation by the Sydney Institute of Marine Science showcases current research projects focused on restoring the ecology of Sydney’s coastline and harbour. Meet the scientists at the small pool and take a swim in the installation. Free entry for ticket holders from 9am to 3pm, Friday March 20 to Sunday March 22.

On 19 March, Waverley Council will present a free forum at Bondi Beach Pavilion to:

Fish Tank
The Ocean Lovers Festival is fishing for great new ideas for the Oceans. It could be crazy or courageous. We are after innovative ideas that push the boundaries to positively impact the health of our oceans. Be part of the Festival Fish Tank and pitch your idea in 3 minutes or less at the Sunshine Stage at Bondi Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday afternoons 21/22 March.
Email ideas to hello@oceanloversfestival.com with a short concept overview. Tell the organisers a bit about your idea to get selected to present a short 3-minute pitch on the Sunshine Stage. All ages and ideas welcome. Live music sessions with bands will perform each side of the Fish Tank talks.

with the Ocean Impact Organisation, Australia’s first ocean impact ecosystem
and startup accelerator: helping people start, grow and invest in businesses
