Join a simultaneous morning tea

Children playing with their food is not usually acceptable practice around the dinner table in most households. Not only is it acceptable during this year’s National Science Week, but Little Scientists Australia is even encouraging children and adults to dig right in and play! With good reason though.

Join a simultaneous morning tea to inspire children to explore and discover food!

Whilst food is an integral part of our daily lives and culture, what we eat also presents multiple opportunities for children to learn STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) concepts, building critical thinking, problem solving and research skills.

Little Scientists Australia is inviting parents, early childhood educators, teachers and children across the country to join in for a simultaneous morning tea virtual incursion. Expert early STEM educators Hayley Bates and Lena Hammond will be guiding fun investigations and sharing some surprising observations by exploring the food we eat over morning tea.

Early STEM experiences are crucial to the development and continuation of positive learning dispositions through children’s education according to Hayley Bates, Head Trainer and National Certifications Coordinator at Little Scientists Australia. “We know that young children are innately curious about the world around them and harnessing that curiosity in a playful and fun way is the best way to spark wonder and the joy of discovery,” says Bates. “What better way to investigate this years National Science Week theme and have fun by seeing how loud a carrot can be crunched? It’s going to be great fun!”

This event promises to be nothing like your typical science class – definitely no periodic table. The virtual incursion will be a hands-on experience with participants encouraged to have their morning tea with them– preferably a variety of fruits and coloured vegetables so adults and children can play along at home or in their school or service whilst watching the event streamed live.

Little Scientists Australia are leaders in early STEM education, providing professional development workshops nation-wide and online and are sure to provide a fun and exciting introduction to inquiry-based STEM showing just how easy and uncomplicated STEM education can be.

Join in for this free National Science Week event on August 17, 18 or 19 and let the big scientists demonstrate some simple techniques to cultivate children’s skills and excitement for STEM exploration and enrich your repertoire of STEM activities. You won’t eat a meal the same way again!
