North side foodies

Foodies will enjoy this year’s science week offering from the Northern Sydney Science Hub that has pulled together a suite of locally produced online events presented by libraries and some of the research agencies located on Sydney’s North side. Providing a chance for community members to get to know the scientific research underway in their neighbourhood, this year’s topics include Indigenous bush foods, future food research and hands on food workshops.

Indigenous bush foods

Bees and food

Discover the important relationship between bees and food in an online event presented by Willoughby Libraries. This one-hour webinar addresses the National Science Week 2021 theme Food: Different by Design with Dr Francisco Garcia Bulle Bueno. Wednesday, 18 August from 12pm. Register to attend

Future food

Join Professor Michelle Colgrave, the Future Protein lead within CSIRO Agriculture & Food, to learn how she uses mass spectrometry and proteomics to help identify key proteins that will benefit Australia’s livestock and plant industries and improve human health. National science quiz

Much more than just trivia, all welcome to join the National Science Quiz in celebration of the world of science. Join a panel of scientists and science communicators in two teams as they answer a series of thought-provoking questions that delve into the many branches of science using humour and some good scientific and mathematical reasoning. While the teams discuss and ponder their answers, play along, test your knowledge and compete for prizes! Presented by Ryde Library. Thursday 19 August from 6pm. Register to attend

Immersive science with SciVR

The Universe is waiting to be discovered! SciVR will take you on a hunt out to Mars and then into the universe, tracking explosive events as they occur with A/Prof Alan Duffy and Dr Rebecca Allen. Science with food workshop

Children aged 6 to 10 are invited to create science using… FOOD! All welcome to join this exciting hands-on science activity for children presented by Ryde library. Participants will use paper chromatography to see how food colours can be separated, make discoveries about electric charges with balloons, perform chemical experiments with foods and so much more!
