Science at the Local is just one of several pub science programs supported by Inspiring Australia NSW. It was created by Dr Hamish Clark, a climate scientist, Kevin Joseph, a high school science teacher and two local Neighbourhood Centres to make science accessible, entertaining and relevant to community members in the Blue Mountains. Representing the Blue Mountains Science Hub, the popular, free, year-round series invites researchers to present on a wide range of topics on a Sunday afternoon at the Springwood Club.
Science at the Local’s welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere has led to a loyal and enthusiastic following, with topics ranging from bushfires, vaccinations and mental health through to natural disasters, viruses and gene therapy. Each presentation is accompanied by a podcast episode, adding to the program’s legacy.
