International Women’s Day 2025

IWD 2025 Banner March Forward banner

International Women’s Day on March 8 is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. The International Women’s Day theme for 2025 is, “March Forward: For ALL Women and Girls”. The theme calls for action to create equal rights and opportunities for all women and girls.

Australia’s first International Women’s Day was held in 1928 in Sydney. Organised by the Militant Women’s Movement, women called for equal pay for equal work, an 8 hour working day for shop girls and paid leave. The next year the event spread to Brisbane. In 1931, annual marches were launched in both Sydney and Melbourne and both marches continue to be held today.

Since these early days, International Women’s Day has continued to grow. It is a day to celebrate women’s achievements and both highlight and work to address barriers that continue to perpetuate gender inequality.

Along with the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February, IWD is also a good time to also celebrate the achievements of our women scientists, and help inspire the next generation of girls into STEM.

If you are hosting a STEM focused event for either International Day of Women and Girl’s in Science or International Women’s Day, let us know and we will add it to this page.
