Become a STEMpal

Calling all NSW STEM professionals! Do you remember the moment your curiosity was first sparked? Now you can be that inspiration for a young student by joining STEMpals.

The program is built on a powerful belief: “You Can’t Be, Who You Can’t See”.

STEMpals connects STEM professionals with primary school students (Grades 5 and 6) through the “lost art” of letter writing.

Become a STEM Mentor in Just 5 Hours a Year.

By sharing your journey, you help demystify the world of science and engineering for children who might not otherwise have access to STEM mentors.

You will be paired with a student based on common hobbies—whether it’s baking, video games, or pets.

You’ll receive a volunteer working with children check and training on how to communicate your complex work effectively to a young audience.

Minimal Time, Maximum Impact

Meet Some of Our STEMpals

These NSW researchers are already using their “STEM superpowers” to inspire the next generation.

Dr. Claire Richards (UTS): A cell biologist who grows “mini placentas” in the lab to help keep moms and babies healthy. When she isn’t under the microscope, she’s in her garden with her dog, chickens, and native bees.

Kenya Fernandes (University of Sydney): A “detective” of the fungal world who studies microscopic fungi in bee hives. Kenya connects with her pen pals through her love of baking bread, building LEGO plants, and video games.

Sally Hurst (Macquarie University): A palaeontologist and archaeologist who travels the world to dig up dinosaur fossils. Growing up on a farm in rural NSW, Sally uses her story to show students that a career in STEM can start right in your own backyard.

Ready to Inspire?

Help us ensure that every child, regardless of where they grow up, has access to an inspiring mentor. Your letters could be the reason a student decides they can be a scientist one day.
