Science at the Local returns

Springwood and Winmalee Neighbourhood Centres again invite community members in the Blue Mountains and Western Sydney to Science at the Local, to be held at the Springwood Country Club on Sunday 12 March from 2:30 pm. Speakers will be Louise Tosetto, a PhD candidate at Macquarie University, who will discuss microplastics and registered nurse Maria Said, who is also the CEO of Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia. Mayor Mark Greenhill and local MP Trish Doyle will be on hand to launch this year’s program and help celebrate the initiative’s Inspiring Australia funding boost.

Speaking at this year’s first event will be Louise Tosetto, a PhD candidate at Macquarie University, who will discuss microplastics. As the name suggests, microplastics are small pieces of plastic that come from consumer and industrial products. Louise’s research examines the impact of microplastic contamination on coastal marine environments.

Also speaking will be registered nurse Maria Said, who is also the CEO of Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia. Maria advocates for individuals who live with food allergy and other allergic diseases, working closely with the health system, the food industry, government and community.

We’re so proud of the community that’s emerged around these events. We are looking forward to another big year and hope we can draw even more people to enjoy these free science events in the Mountains and listen to our podcasts. Please come along, meet people and learn something new.

Background

Science at the Local is a free community event series that features short and engaging presentations from leading scientists, with plenty of time for questions and discussions over a meal or drink. Local residents and basketball teammates, Kevin Joseph and Hamish Clarke, came up with the idea for Science at the Local in 2014. They were soon joined by Winmalee and Springwood Neighbourhood Centres and have been running regular events ever since. Together the group form the Blue Mountains Science Hub, a regional focal point for science communication and engagement activities in the mountains.
