NSW celebrated National Science Week in style! There were hundreds of exciting activities and events recognising the importance of science. Whether you were in the regions or the city, there were opportunities for everyone to engage with STEM. There were events in parks, libraries, museums, galleries, gardens and online too.
My colleagues and the Inspiring Australia NSW committee were able to attended over 50 events and activities, and that’s just a fraction of what took place across the state!
Highlights
ERTHWRX at the Corridor Project – A vibrant weekend in the Central West, blending art and science to explore crucial environmental themes. Indigenous leaders, artists, and scientists engaged in robust discussions on wildlife health, biodiversity loss, microplastics, and alternative energy. Special shoutout to Inspiring NSW’s Aleshia Lonsdale and Mark Temple for their creative contributions, and Phoebe Cowdery for her masterful programming.
Office of Chief Scientist & Engineer Breakfast Seminar – Professor Carolyn Hogg delivered an outstanding presentation on biodiversity, highlighting the work of the Threatened Species Initiative.
Neural Networks and Gut Feelings Art Projects – A week of creativity and science at the City of Sydney Darling Square Library and Hazlehurst Art Centre. Crafting neurons, discussing brain research, and exploring the gut-brain connection made for inspiring, mindful experiences. Thank you to the amazing artists Pat Pillai, Rita Pearce and Mary Hayman.
Young Innovators Australia Robotics Workshop – Hosted at Campbelltown City Library, this workshop sparked excitement about robotics and the growing job opportunities in this field. We’re excited to see this program grow!
Science in the Scrub & Science in the Swamp – Both events were packed with family fun, featuring diverse programming and our expanded “Meet a Scientist” program. Over 30 young scientists inspired future generations by answering questions and demonstrating interactive science all day. Thank you Ren Tuttiett for your hard work on this.
SciFest 2024 is the biggest virtual excursions festival in Australia. This year we had over 26,000 participants joining from across Australia. There were over 15 sessions including Lunchtime Trivia, Science Shows and our Careers in STEM panel.
