2024 National Science Week NSW report summary

Science in the Scrub 2024

We have spent the last few months in reporting mode, looking at all the feedback and statistics. The data has been compiled and it highlights all the amazing projects and outcomes from across NSW.

The 2024 National Science Week campaign across NSW was a wonderful and inclusive celebration of science. There were a huge variety of events providing opportunities to connect and join activities on an extensive range of scientific topics and disciplines for all ages.

The National Science Week website listed 389 events in NSW. 222 of these were private events including Brain Breaks and Schools events. 167 events were public events and many of these had multiple events in one listing.

Inspiring NSW directly supported 19 grant recipients to deliver 101 individual events and activities reaching an audience of 44,195. These events were delivered with the support of 129 partners. In addition, we supported our five Regional Science Hubs to deliver even more events with more partners.

Over 50% of our grant applicants either presented Indigenous Knowledge and Science content in their program, included Local First Nations speakers, and/or collaborated with First Nations peoples. This will become our benchmark for future years to ensure we recognise the importance of Indigenous Knowledge.

Another highlight was the large number of presenters, researchers and scientists involved, particularly early career researchers. Inspiring NSW focuses on communication with the STEM network in universities, research institutions, cultural organisations, and in the science communication sector to source speakers for events, raise awareness of opportunities and provide support as needed.

In the events funded by Inspiring NSW alone, more than 220 individual presenters participated in events and activities. A further 145 presenters were communicating science in other events from the NSW science hubs and federally funded NSW events.

The successful Meet a Scientist program was continued in 2024. This program involves matching young and early career researchers to a selection of community events. The scientists gain science communication experience without having to create events themselves and the event hosts do not have to manage individual speakers.

This year we had 30 researchers respond to the call out and were able to provide multiple event opportunities for them. We also offered the researchers an online training session with a noted science communicator Jiao Jiao Li from UTS, and Vanessa Barratt an expert in outreach and education.  This gave the less experienced researchers an opportunity to talk about their idea for hands on science engagement and get feedback.

The “Meet the Scientists” tent, hosted by Inspiring Australia, was a highlight for visitors of all ages, offering unique opportunities for meaningful engagement with experts. We look forward to continuing this partnership and fostering scientific curiosity in our community for years to come.

Thanks again for recruiting scientists for our ‘meet the scientists’ stalls at our community open day.  They were friendly and engaging and we saw lots of great conversations happening with the community… They also inspired our student volunteers
