Indigenous STEM Awards

Funded by the BHP Billiton Foundation and delivered by CSIRO, the Indigenous STEM Awards recognise, reward and celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and scientists who are studying and working in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field.

The Awards also reward schools, teachers and mentors for supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in pursuing STEM education and careers and recognise the immense value of connecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with inspirational STEM role models, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous.

Award Categories

There are a total of twelve awards over seven categories that cover high school and undergraduate students, STEM professionals, schools, teachers and mentors.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STEM Professional Awards

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STEM Professional Awards recognise people who have made a significant contribution to key STEM initiatives and demonstrate suitability and capacity to act as a role model for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. There are two awards in this category – the early career award and the career achievement award.

School Award

The School Award recognises leadership in Indigenous STEM education.

STEM Champion Award

The STEM Champion Award celebrates STEM professionals, communities, organisations and individuals who are contributing to the success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in achieving their STEM aspirations.

Teacher Award

The Teacher Award recognises outstanding educators who are engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, community and organisations to incorporate Indigenous knowledge into core STEM programs and lesson plans.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student STEM Achievement Awards

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student STEM Achievement Awards are for high school and tertiary undergraduate or TAFE students showing passion, engagement and improvement in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, as well as leadership capabilities. Three winners will be awarded – two Secondary Student Award winners and one Tertiary Student Award winner.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Maths Achievement Awards

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Maths Award recognises students who have shown a passion, engagement and improvement in mathematics as well as demonstrating how they have used mathematics to solve a real-life problem. Two winners will be awarded.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Science Achievement Awards

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Science Award recognises students who are able to demonstrate passion, engagement and improvement in science and who have used the science inquiry process to solve a real-life problem. Two winners will be awarded.
