The Institute of Interesting Ideas – Illuminating Stories from Fascinating People – has recently launched in Kiama, NSW. In a world where most of us consume content alone on our phones and tablets, or at home on television, founder & director Naima Brown believes in the power of a live event.
The Institute’s mission is to bring people together for eye-opening and thought-provoking conversation spurred on by on-stage interviews with Australia’s most engaging people. The Winter Series features guests from across the spectrum – journalist Melissa Doyle, author and comedian Rosie Waterland and parenting expert Maggie Dent to name a few.
Including voices from across the science world is one of the Institute’s core mission.
True crime
The Institute will host forensic anthropologist and criminologist Xanthe Mallett in conversation with Jan Fran from SBS’ The Feed discussing all things True Crime. Mallett will discuss the most cutting edge data that better helps us understand the mind of a psychopath, while at the same time teaching us that society actually needs a certain amount of psychopaths and that the great majority of them are non-violent.
Mallett and Fran will also discuss the True Crime genre that’s sweeping across Australia – from podcasts to Netflix series – and explore what exactly it is about crime that fascinates us so very much.
Event details: Xanthe Mallett & Jan Fran will be on stage together on the 12th July – information about the event & to book tickets here
Duffy investigates how galaxies form within clouds of dark matter and tries to explain it, and the rest of science, to as wide an audience as possible. Australia’s science whisperer, Duffy makes even the most far-out concepts fun & accessible. He’s taking to the Institute of Interesting Idea’s stage to discuss all things space-travel, and what role Australia might have in getting us there.
