Inspiring Australia NSW is funding five positions for the Science Comedy Program for early and mid-career researchers across Sydney universities.
The program, which is run by Future Science Talks, involves 8 workshops where you will meet with speechwriters and comedians to develop a 10-minute talk that is 80% science and 20% humour – which you’ll then give at the Sydney Fringe Festival on Thursday 26 September.
The program includes three bespoke one-on-one sessions, which will help you to be a more engaging public speaker, lecturer and communicator. The storytelling techniques will help academics and scientists to develop rapport more quickly and easily with major donors and philanthropists.
Future Science Talks has allocated one position for each of the following universities: UNSW, Sydney University, Macquarie University, UTS, and Western Sydney University. This is the 4th time the Science Comedy Program has been run in Sydney. It is run every six months during the Sydney Comedy Festival in May and the Sydney Fringe in September.
Saoirse Connor-Desai, a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Sydney featured in the 2024 Sydney Comedy Festival.
“This was such an incredible experience and I learned so much, and also met some great people through the program. I surprised myself with what I ended up producing,” she said.
Program director, David Crisante, says the program is designed for absolute beginners in public speaking and comedy.
“This is a pressure-free program where participants learn new communication skills and master the three-part structure of a joke. Techniques are carefully broken down, which means the program is highly accessible and valuable to anyone who is interested in learning something new,” he said.
“We are very grateful for the support of Inspiring Australia in helping scientists gain new skills and for helping the public learn more about the great scientific advances that are taking place across Sydney.
