National Science Week NSW launch

NSW 2025 National Science Week Launch

National Science Week 2025 in New South Wales was launched yesterday at Science Space, University of Wollongong, by The Hon. Anoulack Chanthivong MP, NSW Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology.

The event was hosted by Emily Jateff, Chair of Inspiring Australia NSW, and began with an eloquent Welcome to Country from Aunty Joyce, a local Illawarra Elder. She spoke beautifully about the her peoples relationship to Country, and how the skies have long been used as a guide to the seasons.

Professor G.Q. Max Lu AO the new Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Wollongong, shared stories from his childhood—early experiments (some involving explosions and fires!)—and his journey from rural China to leading the University. He also explained why teaching and research in STEM disciplines remain a priority.

The Hon. Anoulack Chanthivong, NSW Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology officially launched the National Science Week in NSW.

Minister Chanthivong, who is also the Member for Macquarie Fields spoke with passion about the power of science and technology to drive innovation in the state and to solve real-world problems that benefit everyone in society.

Stuart Creal, Director of Science Space, outlined this year’s program of events from UOW, including open days at the Batemans Bay and Nowra regional campuses, as well as an evening of Indigenous stories and science.

“It was a tremendous start to the week to host the official launch of National Science Week for NSW here at UOW Science Space. Each year, engagement grows-becoming bigger, better, and more diverse-as we celebrate our shared passion for science. In a rapidly changing world, facing global challenges that shape both our present and future, it has never been more important for our entire community to be interested, involved, and informed about science, that is what makes Science Week so special, in providing so much access to many great programs.”

Guests were treated to an amazing demonstration of the Science Space Planetarium, taking a quick tour of the universe to visit Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn before returning to Earth.

We thank NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, Deputy Chief Scientist & Engineer Dr Darren Saunders, our Questacon colleagues, senior STEM researchers from the University of Wollongong, and local Illawarra science engagement leaders who attended the launch.
