The Citizen Science Corner project is an exciting new program that gives communities access to information and resources on how to get involved in local citizen science projects. Dedicated spaces are being set up in libraries across the state to make citizen science free, accessible, and open to all.
I’m new to citizen science – how can I get involved?
Each library is creating its own Citizen Science Corner tailored to local needs. You’ll find field guides to local flora, fauna and fungi, displays of local citizen science projects, and information about useful apps you can download.
You can also borrow a Citizen Science Kit. These kits vary by library. For example, three Wollongong library branches offer backpacks with binoculars, a smartphone macro lens, magnifying glasses, citizen science photography cards, sketchbooks, and field guides to local birds. Take one out for the weekend, explore your surroundings, and upload your observations with your smartphone.
Libraries are also hosting talks with local scientists and researchers about their citizen science projects. Check your library’s website, sign up to their mailing list, or follow them on social media to see what’s coming up.
