The Young Creator’s Conference is a premium school’s event within Sydney Science Festival. What makes this event so special is the skill, enthusiasm and creativity shown by its 100+ primary and secondary school participants. The event is called a Conference rather than a Faire or a Show because it claims for young people an entitlement for their work to be taken seriously and be worthy of participating in an adult active learning space.
With ingenuity as the common element of the day, Young Creator’s Conference sits beautifully against the backdrop of the Museum of Applies Arts and Sciences’ (MAAS) extraordinary collections and exhibitions. For young people, the day is a ‘real world’ learning experience, where their communication and presentation skills as well as their projects are challenged. For teachers, it’s an awesome informal networking opportunity, where great curriculum linking and programming ideas, along with successful organisational tactics, are shared and developed.
In 2016, the inaugural MAAS Young Creators Conference opened a window into some of today’s most innovative classrooms to showcase young people and educators from fifteen NSW schools Independent, Catholic and Public Primary and High schools from the inner-city (International Grammar School, Paddington Public) to West and South West Sydney (Parramatta Marist, Hoxton Park Public), Northern Sydney (Wahroonga Public), and regional NSW (Canobolas High, Parkes High).
Projects created and presented by the young people featured maker-spaces, coding clubs, robotics, Internet-of-Things, smart-farms, enquiry-based science and even an inter-school design challenge.
One participating Public School Principal said: “I just want to say a big thank you for the YCC. Our kids were still buzzing today and had such a wonderful time… The day was a huge success for us… Looking forward to next year.”
Another school librarian commented: “Thank-you for the opportunity to bring my students to the Powerhouse for the Young Creators Conference. This experience was so powerful for them.”
This year’s event will be even bigger and better and you can find out how to present here.
