Maths inside

Maths Inside is a collaborative project funded by the Federal Government and a cross-faculty team at UTS under the Australian Maths and Science Partnerships Program, CSIRO, and The Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers. Designed to address the urgent need for more student engagement in science, technology, engineering and maths education, Maths Inside includes online videos, classroom activities and a Pathways to Maths online resource to prepare studnets for university..

The goal in the creation of these resources was to create tasks which supplement typical textbook activities targeted specifically to students in year eight through twelve.

The need for such classroom resources has become well established in the education community and is a response to the call from teachers and students for learning materials that can help to bring maths to life in an inspiring and engaging way.

More than 1700 teachers and students across 85 schools and colleges in public, Catholic and independent sectors (mostly in NSW with some in Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania) have engaged in the Maths Inside program with videos and class activities.

Project manager Dr Marco Angelini said the implementation of this $1.9m project has had a bigger impact than the team could have imagined especially in inspiring young females to consider a career in the STEM field.

“Young women often don’t have female scientists to look up to, and Maths Inside is helping to fill an ever-growing gap in STEM,” he said, adding that 74.8% of students agree with the statement: “This video module has made me more able to see myself using maths in a future career”.

The Maths Inside team are very pleased with the impact these resources have had on  educators and their creativity, with 83.3% of teachers reporting that they increased their conceptual understanding of the subject. 96.1% of teachers said they look forward to using more of the project resources with their students.

Maths Inside is successfully delivering comprehensive and engaging learning resources that have exceeded the project’s performance goals and making a difference in the lives of science minded students across Australia.
