NSW Regional Science Hubs in the Central West, Riverina, Sapphire Coast, Central Coast, Hunter, New England and Northern Rivers regions will join this year’s virtual #scienceweek celebrations, presenting locally produced content featuring regional scientists.
Central West
Developed in the Central West by the Orange, Cowra, Cabonne Science Hub and the NSW Department of Primary Industries, PlantX shows how scientists monitor the health of plant systems, including pests, diseases, and beneficial insects.
Hear from presenters including Dr Toni Chapman, Bacteriologist, Elizabeth Frost, Bee Specialist, Dr Angus Carnegie, Forest pathologist, Shannon Mulholl, Plant virologist and Dr. Polychronis Rempoulakis, the Leader Plant Biosecurity Entomology.
Try your hand at botanical illustration in live video classes based on plant biosecurity methodologies using a macro lens that will be posted to you prior to each class. Your professional tutors will be Todd Fuller instructing in digital illustration and drawing using iPads and Angus Fisher teaching botanical illustration drawing.

PlantX celebrates the 2020 International Year of Plant Health. Events will be moderated by Dr. Jordan Bailey, a plant pathologist/mycologist and Curator of the NSW Department of Primary Industries Biosecurity Collections, and Phoebe Cowdery, the convener of the Orange Cowra Cabonne Science Hub.
The Riverina Science Hub will celebrate National Science Week online this year with a range of online festival activities for all ages.
The National Indigenous Science Education Program will be live-streamed into primary school classrooms this year in partnership with Macquarie University, Charles Sturt University Wagga Wagga City Library and Wiradjuri Elders.
Tune into Science for Breakfast with Microscopist Dr John Harper and Lecturer in Biology and Environmental Sciences Celia Connor as the share bite size science facts each weekday morning during National Science Week.
There will be two interactive lived-streamed science workshops Bubblemania and Flash Bang perfect for family audiences. Other family friendly online events include SciVR 2020 Immersive Science IV presented in partnership with Swinburne University.
Running from Saturday 15 August through to Sunday 23 August, the 2020 Sapphire Coast Science Festival is a great opportunity for people of all ages to have engaging, fun experiences with citizen science, environmental displays, threatened species information, online science and sustainability projects.
The Central Coast Science Hub will present a range of activities to mark National Science Week including a STEM careers forum, a Symbiosis Art Competition to highlight the symbiotic relationships formed by animals, plants and microbes in the ocean, online science research presentations and 3D maker activities.
A guided creative session will allow people to design and build, paint or draw ‘super symbiosis’ artworks and then submit them online for judging.
The project will also design online learning resources will to cover the topics: Coral Reef Restoration in Vanuatu and When does a sunken naval vessel become a reef?, bringing to life the historic naval vessel the HMAS Adelaide that sunk off Avoca Beach.
Science at the Local will launch a second animation, The Four Friends of Fire, to share findings of amazing bushfire science that’s taken place in Australia and around the world in an entertaining way. Blue Mountains-based designer David Shooter and Wollongong animation studio Rockshelf Productions have partnered with bushfire researcher Dr Hamish Clark to create an engaging animation on the fundamentals of bushfire and climate change.
In the Northern Rivers, Dark Science returns, delivering bite-size happenings and experiences. It will take place online, in person, under cover of night and in the trees. Look at the vastness surrounding us, our ancient Indigenous Astronomy, peek in at creatures under cover of night, plant emerging forests and dive into the deep blue, discover the art in science.
Be part of Thursday Night Live! as it presents Into the deep blue, a diverse panel talking about humans and our interactions with the ocean. This discussion will embrace the innovative technologies, capabilities and skills needed to achieve economic, environmental and social sustainability of our oceans. It features insights and inquiries into workable solutions that generate healthy oceans, healthy economies and healthy communities. Issues explored will include humans in the environment, the role of art and technology and how scientists are playing a part in understanding the effects of climate change on our Oceans.
Facilitator Dr Kristin den Exter will be joined by award-winning contemporary artist Tamara Dean, drone scientist Professor Brendan Kelaher, and Great Barrier Reef marine scientist Kay Davis, both from subtropical Southern Cross University.
Participate in the Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival’s mini solar car building competition that you can do at home with the fastest races to be filmed, shared and cheered online. Other Hunter highlights include: KiDE Science who will be running an online live STEAM class for ages 3-10; Curious Cubs inspiring children to design a marine creature and virtual programs from the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens will be compiling at-home botany experiments.

Eureka Explorers and Charles Sturt University have partnered to create a fun, carnival like day, full of interactive learning experiences with industry leaders in STEM.

Explore this year’s National Science Week schools theme, “Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans” and other science concepts across Armidale town and UNE campus via ‘moments’ created in chalk art, text, mini installations and more. Community members are also invited to experience a science themed installation at the Armidale Regional Library.
