The Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival is set to deliver a variety of ocean science events in Bondi community members of all ages can experience across the weekend of 12-13 March 2022. With the support of Inspiring Australia, Volvo and Waverley Council, organisers are presenting two full days of free Ocean Lab workshops for kids and a full program of ocean science and innovation talks on their festival sunshine powered stage at Bondi Beach.
Billed “Science in your swimmers”, the festival offers all of its events as accessible and free on the beachfront. You can even get under the water with the National Maritime Museum hosting underwater drone tours from North Bondi.
Speaker panels include
- Big Fascinating Giants of the Sea with Dr Vanessa Pirotta and Dr Olaf Meynecke hosted by Laura Wells
- Prof David Booth with his Gone Troppo talk about the tropical future for Sydney Seas and
- An Ancient Wisdom Modern Science panel session with UNSW, Sydney Institute of Marine Science and the Gamay Indigenous Sea Rangers.
- The Future of Our Ocean, a panel discussion on Sunday 13 March 13 will feature Dr Kate Quigley, Dr Jen Matthews, Prof Kirsten Berkendorf and Dr Emma Camp among other esteemed scientists sharing their knowledge with the public.
At the famous Icebergs Pool, the Sydney Institute of Marine Science will be immersing a Crayweed Forest and their celebrated Living Seawall tiles into the pool so visitors can literally swim through these ocean restoration projects and meet the marine science teams.
The festival of Ideas, Art + Music and Actions will include a market on Saturday and Sunday full of cool ocean friendly products and organisations as well as a free music and art exhibitions plus actions like a Beach Clean, Yoga for the Sea and an Ocean Lovers Lap swim with the winner getting a new Volvo electric car for a week.
All programs are free but book a spot to get into the Icebergs Pool exhibition via the online portal to save your spot Link.
There are still places for volunteers if you are interested, being coordinated through the NSW chapter of the United Nations Association of Australia offering some fun roles at this Bondi Beach festival. And you will get a pass to the wrap party when it all finishes on Sunday, March 13.
